Rapid City Regional Airport welcomes first rally-week flight Wednesday

RAPID CITY, S.D. .- Officials at Rapid City Regional Airport welcomed the first flight from Peoria, Illinois by water cannon Wednesday afternoon.

This is one of eight routes Allegiant Airlines is flying from across the country from Aug. 4 through 15.

This is the first year an airline has offered specific routes during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Allegiant is flying from Appleton, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Knoxville, Nashville and Peoria Wednesdays and Saturdays during the Rally and from Pittsburgh and Sanford-Orlando Thursdays and Sundays through Aug. 15.

The Executive Director for Rapid City Regional Airport, Patrick Dame, says these Rally flights are something he hopes the airport can keep going in the coming years. He says each plane can carry roughly 150 passengers and is bringing the most traffic into the airport during a short, 10-period.
