RAPID CITY, S.D. – Weather officials in Rapid City say a rare weather phenomenon was reported Monday night.
The National Weather Service says around 10:15 p.m., a heat burst occurred over Rapid City.
A heat burst typically occurs at night and is when hot and dry air from higher levels accelerates down to the surface. They are typically associated with decaying thunderstorms.
The temperature in Rapid City jumped 10 degrees, the dew point dropped 15 degrees, and the wind gusted to 56 mph.
