RC man arrested after high speed chase Monday

STURGIS, S.D. – Area Law enforcement were engaged in a high speed chase Monday morning that, reportedly at times, reached speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Meade County Sheriff Pat West tells KBHB News the chase began on I-90 when a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a black Chevy Suburban that was the subject of a traffic complaint at mile marker 52.

The subject, identified as Steven Frost of Rapid City, fled the traffic stop in the westbound lane of I-90 at mile marker 33. Frost exited the Interstate at Sturgis and struck another vehicle at Exit 32, causing damage. The chase went down Junction Avenue at a high rate of speed, where the vehicle then collided with the front stairs and railing at the Iron Horse Saloon at the intersection of Junction and Lazelle.

The chase then went east of Sturgis, where West says the suspect took Fort Meade Way, crashing through a fence at Pleasant Valley, before getting back on I-90, eastbound at Exit 37.

The vehicle was finally stopped by spike strips at I-90’s, Exit 48, where Frost exited the vehicle as it caught fire in the Lynn’s parking lot. Frost was apprehended and is facing numerous charges, including aggravated eluding.

West says they are still investigating the incident and believe the vehicle may have been stolen out of Rapid City.

West thanked the numerous law enforcement that helped, including the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Sturgis Police, Summerset Police and Black Hawk Fire Department.

He says thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.
