RC police respond to juveniles firing handgun at each other

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City police are investigating a shooting incident that happened around 1:35 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Surfwood Drive and North Maple Avenue.

Police say they responded to reports of gunshots and juveniles firing a handgun at each other.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with witnesses and victims, and learned that those responsible may have fled into a residence in the 100 block of East Knollwood. A perimeter was established as North Middle School and Knollwood Elementary were placed on secure status.

The Rapid City/Pennington County Special Response Team was called out once it was discovered that an individual was armed and barricaded inside the residence. The SRT extracted several individuals from the residence safely, with one individual identified as 25-year-old Faron Mesteth of Rapid City. Mesteth was placed under arrest on a parole hold.

The individuals responsible for the shooting were not inside the residence, and RCPD believes that they fled prior to law enforcement’s arrival.

RCPD did not report any injuries.

Police are still investigating the whereabouts of those responsible and the circumstances regarding the incident. The responsible individuals and victims are known to each other, and the shooting does not appear random at this time.
