RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Area School Board decided to pull a proposed policy off their agenda Monday night that dealt with “Parents/Guardian/Students Rights in Education.”
Board member Amy Policky says they pulled it because the policies and South Dakota laws it tackles already exist elsewhere. She says it would be better for the board to work on a resolution to make those policies more visible in student handbooks and on the district’s website.
The policy attracted a lot of attention, regardless.
Some community members testified to board members they want a clearer policy and voiced alleged “propaganda” and “radical left” ideology seeping into education because parental rights were not being addressed.
Those comments got push back from some who voiced concerns over the policy’s alleged targeting of teacher ability to help at-risk students and students among the LGBTQ community.
The board plans to revisit the topic as a resolution at a later meeting.
