RCAS votes to hold Senior-only prom on April 17

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Area School Board has made the decision to host a limited prom on April 17 — for seniors only — although an underclassman could be asked by a senior to attend.

The decision comes after a month of emotional testimony.

April 17th was set as the original prom, but pushed back to June because of concerns about the spread of COVID-19. School officials worried holding prom so close to graduation could lead to some students missing it if there were an outbreak.

After much discussion, school officials took into account the decreasing number of cases as well as Oyate Health’s offer to offer vaccination to those 16 to 18-years-old.

Attending students will be required to wear a mask at the event.
