Records broken as Howard Wood Dakota Relays wrap up

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Howard Wood Dakota Relays wrapped up Saturday, as some records were broken.

Simeon Birnbaum of Rapid City Stevens broke the 1,600 meter record in a time of 04:09.74. That record was set back in 1973.

On the girls’ side, Ciana Stiefel of Custer broke the pole vault record with a mark of 12-feet, 7 inches. The previous record was set in 2008.

Other area athletes picking up wins included Aidan Hedderman of Sturgis, who won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.62. Custer’s Blake Boyster won the boys 400, and Rapid City Stevens’ Brionna Holso captured the girls 1,600.
