RAPID CITY, S.D. – A man from Fort Welton, Florida who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter has been sentenced in South Dakota.
On November 24, 2022, Giles Frederick Hulsmann, 38, found himself lost near Pine Ridge, far removed from his intended route. For unknown reasons, Hulsmann then flew into a rage and sped up to 80 MPH in a 45 MPH zone.
While speeding, Hulsmann struck a motorcyclist. A reconstruction of the accident showed that Hulsmann hit the motorcyclist head-on with no attempt to swerve or brake.
Hulsmann was indicted for Involuntary Manslaughter by a federal grand jury in June of 2023 and pleaded guilty on May 3, 2024. The sentencing took place on July 25, 2024.
Giles Frederick Hulsmann was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Following the sentencing, Hulsmann was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
