DEVILS TOWER NATIONAL MONUMENT, Wyo. – Wyoming officials say a rock climber died on Sunday, Sept. 22 after falling during a climb at Devils Tower.
Officials report that responding staff found 21-year-old Stewart Phillip Porter from Eau Claire, Wisconsin and his climbing partner around 8:40 p.m.
Porter was rappelling the second pitch of El Cracko Diablo and sustained major injuries after falling, where he was later pronounced dead on scene by a Hulett EMS Paramedic.
Officials add that Porter’s climbing partner was later rescued with the help from Devils Tower Lodge Climbing Guides and Buck Wild Climbing Guides from the wall of the Tower after they were stranded.
There have only been seven climbing deaths in the 100 plus year history of climbing at Devils Tower.
