Rodney Ray Coon, 65, passed away on September 9th, 2023 due to a recent battle with lung cancer. With his favorite music playing, his “sweetie,” wife Cindy, by his side, and a few of his other loved ones surrounding his bed, he peacefully took his last breath.

Rodney was born to Richard and Violet (Huckins) Coon on Jan. 18th, 1958, in Martin, South Dakota. He was the youngest of four children, full of energy, enthusiasm, and a little mischief, which enabled him to pack a lifetime of adventure into his short 65 years.

He found the love of his life when he was in the 5th grade. His future wife, his “sweetie” as he affectionally called her, Cindy (Brunsch), lived on the same street. She recalls him throwing pine cones at her from his porch as she walked by on her way home. Thirteen years later, on July 3rd, 1982 they married in a beautiful patio wedding at this very house, a house they have made their home for the last 35 years.

This home was filled with so much laughter, love, and fun. It was a home away from home for all his nieces and nephews, a place of great memories for so many! Rodney loved sharing his knowledge of music, and teaching his nieces and nephews pool, snooker, ping pong, chess, even a little basketball. The music was always playing, kids were dancing, and most likely a few adults were too!

Rodney worked hard for the family business, Coon Chevrolet. He started in the wash rack right after high school, and over the years moved up to sales. This was a perfect fit for his nature, as he was very friendly, with an absolute heart of gold! His personality was affectious, and he loved being in a room full of his friends and family, sharing laughs often late into the night. He was a treasured husband, proud daddy to his beloved pets, precious son, cherished brother, favorite uncle, and a much-loved friend to many! He will be remembered for his beautiful blue eyes, love of music, golf, motorcycles, cars, and overall zest for life. Upon learning of his passing, one of his nephews shared, “We have lost our cool.” Rockin’ Rodney you are loved, and you will be missed by so many!

He is survived by wife, Cindy; mother, Violet Coon; sisters, Diana Cano & Judy Soderlin; brother, Dan (Diane) Coon; sisters-in-law, Nancy Kehn & Jane Rutherford (Rusty); brother-in-law Jim (Jill) Brunsch; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard (Dick) Coon; nephew, Justin Cano; brothers-in-law, Beryl Brunsch & Jack Brunsch; sister-in-law, Carol Anderson and husband Stanton; and niece, Angela Amiotte.

Cards and memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 321 Martin, SD 57551.
