PIERRE, SD – The rules to produce industrial hemp in South Dakota are slowly making progress.
Representative Lee Qualm of Platte says the state rules have been submitted to the federal government for review. “The rule review will be done in November. We’re getting there. Obviously it’s taking longer than a lot of people hoped it would.”
Qualm says the rules to grow and move the crop have been clarified. “People need to have the proper paperwork.”
Qualm says the Department of Public Safety has also approved the rules.
He says there will be a meeting for prospective producers later this month. “We already have a meeting scheduled in Fort Pierre on August 29 to start the education process so producers can become comfortable with the rules.”
Qualm says he is confident there will be hemp planted in the state next spring.
