Samuel Dale Root, age 84, of Midland, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Avantara Nursing Home in Pierre.
Graveside services with military honors will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023 at the Midland Cemetery in Midland.
A celebration of life gathering will follow from 3-5 p.m. at the Food and Fuel in Midland.
October 3, 2023, at 3:30 a.m. this world lost a friend and kind soul to God. Samuel Dale Root died from complications of diabetes. He was 84 years old and had fought this disease for the last 20 years. Through all his losses including his eyesight, mobility, and amputations of his toes, he never lost his wit, smart-aleck remarks, or his friendly greeting and genuine concern for others.
Sam was born May 21, 1939, to Samuel and Emma (Fosheim) Root, Sr. He lived a life of dedication to family, friends, and this country and proudly served in the United States Army from 1963 until 1965 as an engineer.
Sam had a great working career working on grain elevators where he once fell 40-60 feet with his brother Dan when a scaffold fell over. He then worked for Floyd Sammons for 5 years and finished his career at the age of 65 managing a paving machine used for road construction.
He spent this time making life better for his mother, brothers, and sisters. He was always ready to go the extra mile for family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include two brothers Danny Root and his wife Dorothy of Riverton, Wyoming, and Clifford Root and his wife Marisa of Sheridan, Wyoming; one sister Betty Haerer and her husband Darwin of Wall; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Emma (Fosheim) Root; two brothers Glenn in the Rapid City flood in 1972, and Lawrence on March 7, 2017; a sister Sylvia Huber on February 21, 2019; a brother-in-law LeRoy Huber; and nephews Marty Haerer and Kevin Huber.
