Saturday afternoon crash claims life of 69-year-old male

MARTIN, S.D. — One person died Saturday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash west of Martin.

Names of the two persons involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary information indicates that a 2009 Smart Fortwo was westbound on U.S. Highway 18 when it crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound 2018 Freightliner semi truck.

The 69-year-old male driver of the Smart Fortwo was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The 56-year-old truck driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation.
