RAPID CITY, S.D. — The St. Thomas More Cavaliers, ranked #4 in Class A, took advantage of Scooper mistakes and rolled to a 43-24 win on Saturday evening.
The Cavaliers led 15-5 after one quarter and 26-16 at the half as senior guard Caleb Hollenbeck scorched the nets for 13 points. The STM defense held Sturgis to three points in the third quarter, outscoring the Scoopers 11-3 and jumping out to a 37-19 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
Both teams played their reserves for much of the fourth quarter and the Cavaliers cruised to the win.
St. Thomas More (8-0) was led by Hollenbeck, who scored 16 points. Jordan Uhlir added eight points and five rebounds. The Cavaliers shot 32% from the field and were 8 of 10 from the free throw line. STM had five turnovers and 22 rebounds.
Dysen Peterson scored eight points for Sturgis (2-2), with Ryan Heinert adding five. Jake Vliem had three points and nine rebounds. The Scoopers shot 26% from the field and were three of six from the charity stripe. Sturgis committed 16 turnovers and snared 18 rebounds.
The Sturgis boys and girls are in action next on Tuesday at West Gym, as they host the Rapid City Christian Comets. Girls tip-off is scheduled for 6:30pm.
