HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – Both Sturgis Scooper girls and boys got much needed wins at Hot Springs Thursday night.
In the girls game, Hot Springs hung right with Sturgis in the first half. Raina Ghost Bear had 13 points and after a 14-10 first quarter, the Lady Bison trailed 24 to 17.
But Sturgis would go on a run in the third quarter and outscored Hot Springs 20-7 to take a commanding lead they wouldn’t relinquish as the Scoops picked up their sixth win of the year 54 to 36.
Kaylee Whatley led the Scoopers in scoring with 16 points. Makayla Keffeler added 10.
In the boys game, it was close the whole way as the Scoopers held on for a narrow 42-40 victory.
Sturgis led 11-7 after the first quarter and 15-14 at halftime. After a 25-24 lead after three, the Bison stayed right with Sturgis to the very end. The Bison had the ball with 6 seconds to play and a chance to tie or take the lead, but the Sturgis defense held strong and the Bison couldn’t get off a good shot.
The Scoopers were led by Konner Berndt’s 10 points. Own Cass added 7.
The Scoopers pick up their third victory of the season.
