Scooper girls, boys basketball open season with wins

STURGIS, S.D. – Both the Sturgis Scooper girls and boys basketball teams opened up the new season with wins over Douglas.

In the girls matchup, both teams started slow, with Douglas taking a five point 21-16 lead into the halftime locker room.

Sturgis came out in the second half, and locked down the defense, outscoring Douglas 14-4 to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Sturgis was paced by Sarah Janz, who scored 19 points in the 45-39 victory.

Douglas was led Nique High Hawk’s 16 points.

Both teams were plagued by turnovers — Douglas committing 21 and Sturgis 19.

In the boys game, Sturgis dominated the first two and half quarters – taking a 20 point lead in the third quarter.

However, Douglas would mount a comeback, and make the game close down the stretch.

Sturgis led 45-36 after three, and got outscored 17-13 in the fourth. The Scoopers, though, would hang on for a 58-53 win.

Marcus Myrick was the difference down the stretch for the Scoopers, knocking down 7 free throws in the final minutes to secure the win. He finished with 15 points while his teammate Ryder Ladner added 14 points.

Kolin Ray, who was the leader in the Douglas comeback, led the Patriots with 15 points.
