BOX ELDER, S.D. – The Sturgis Scooper girls basketball team dropped a heart breaker to Douglas in overtime Thursday night.
Chantell Jones dropped in the winning bucket with 2.9 seconds left in overtime to secure a 48-47 win.
After a 21-19 deficit at the half, Sturgis outsocred Douglas 18-6 to take a 37-27 lead into the fourth quarter.
That’s when Jones’ caught fire, and helped the Patriots catch back up to tie the game at 40 at the end of regulation.
Douglas was perfect from the free throw line in the extra period, but it was the bank shot as time expired by Jones that gave them the win.
Jones finished with 24 points on the night to lead all scorers.
Sarah Janz and Kaylee Whatley paced Sturgis with 12 points each.
The loss was costly for Sturgis. They drop to the bottom of the Class AA rankings.
