STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Scooper girls basketball team erased a first quarter deficit to earn a tough win over Belle Fourche Tuesday night.
After a 9-6 first quarter deficit, the Scoopers outscored Belle Fourche 12-5 in the second quarter to take an 18-14 lead.
Belle Fourche would stay right with the Scoopers the rest of the way, and the game down to the final seconds as the Broncs would miss a three-pointer at the buzzer giving Sturgis a 41-39 victory.
Kaylee Whatley led Sturgis with 14 points and pulling down 13 rebounds for a double-double.
Sarah Janz added 11 points.
The Scoopers shot 41-percent from the floor while the Broncs only shot 24-percent.
Meanwhile, the Scooper boys fell behind to the Broncs early, and never regained momentum as Belle Fourche cruised to a 61-40 victory.
The Broncs outscored the Scoopers 17-10 in the first quarter and never looked back, led by Kelby Olson’s 25 points.
Belle Fourche led by 10 at the half and increased it to 46-29 after three.
Ryder Ladner led Sturgis with 16 points.
