STURGIS, SD – The Sturgis Scooper boys soccer team scored two goals in the second half to defeat the Pierre Governors, 3-1 on Thursday night at Woodle Field. The Pierre Governor girls exploded for six second half goals to rout the Scooper girls, 7-0 .
The first half of the girls matchup was a defensive battle, with Pierre striking first on a goal by Katie Hostler with 13:53 left in the first half. The Govs took a 1-0 lead into the half. Â
The Pierre offensive onslaught began with 27:28 to go in the game with a goal by Ryann Barry to give the Govs a 2-0 lead. Â Pierre tallied five more scores in the second half to defeat the Scoopers 7-0.Â
Pierre improved their record to 3-0 and the Scooper girls fell to 2-2 on the season.Â
In the boys game, Sturgis got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Taylor Colunga to put the Scoopers up 1-0. Sturgis made a defensive mistake late in the first half, resulting in a score by Pierre forward Jacoby LaRoche to tie the game at 1-1 going into halftime Â
The Scoopers put the offensive pressure on Pierre and struck again early in the second half on a goal by Carson Wolter to give Sturgis a 2-1 lead. Talan Kulbom added an insurance goal with 8:34 left to seal the Scooper win, 3-1.
Pierre falls to 1-1-1 on the season and Sturgis improves to 3-1. Â The Scooper boys host Hot Springs Saturday at Woodle Field with the kickoff scheduled for noon. The Scooper girls host Dakota Valley on Saturday with the kickoff scheduled for 3pm.Â
