Scooper Soccer Teams Sweep Cavs

STURGIS, SD – The Sturgis Scooper girls led 3-0 at the half on their way to a 4-1 win over the St. Thomas More Lady Cavaliers on Tuesday evening at Woodle Field. The Scooper boys controlled the tempo from whistle to whistle as they shut out the Cavaliers, 10-0 in the nightcap.

Ella Walker struck first for the Scoopers with 19:21 remaining in the first half, beating Lady Cav goalie Hannah Howard with the first goal of the match to give Sturgis a 1-0 lead. Berkely Gill netted two more first half goals give the Scooper girls to a 3-0 lead at the half.

Brianna Katzenstein got STM on the scoreboard with a goal early into the second half, but Iris Zylstra answered with a goal of her own with 23:01 left in the match to give Sturgis an insurance goal and the 4-1 victory.

Goalkeeper Ariana Burke had 17 saves for Sturgis (2-6), who had 22 shots on goal, two fouls, three offside penalties and two corner kicks. Goalkeeper Hannah Howard had 15 saves for the Lady Cavs (2-5). STM had 19 shots on goal, five fouls, two offside penalties and three corner kicks.

Both Christian Lemcke and Carson Wolter had hat tricks for the Sturgis boys, who shutout St. Thomas More, 10-0. Troy Wolter and Quinn Bruch had a goal apiece for Sturgis while Jaxon Dodson finished with two scores for the Scoopers.

Wyatt Jensen and Levi Doten shared goalkeeping duties for Sturgis (3-5-1), finishing with seven total saves. Sturgis had three corner kicks and three fouls in the match. St. Thomas More (2-4-1) had four fouls while Levi Brechtel and Curtis Farnsworth shared time in the goal, finishing with 10 total saves.

The Scooper boys and girls travel to Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday to take on the Crusaders.
