STURGIS, SD – It’s been a season of weather postponements and cancellations for the Sturgis Scooper baseball squad but they made the most of their Mother’s Day game against the Douglas Patriots on Sunday at Strong Field.
The Sturgis Scooper baseball team went scoreless in the first inning and trailed Douglas 1-0, then the floodgates opened and the Scoopers plated four runs in the third inning and 12 more in the fourth to end the game by the 15-run mercy rule, 16-1.
Yaden Miller earned the win for the Scoopers, giving up no hits, two walks and one run over four innings. The Scoopers pounded out 13 hits and were led by Bricon Herren, who went 3-for-4 at the dish with three RBIs. Jack Knutson, Miller and Jeren Andrzejewski each had two hits for Sturgis.
Caleb Hauser took the loss for Douglas. Hauser gave up 12 hits and 15 runs over 3 2/3 innings of work. Brandon Kolve score the lone run for the Patriots.
Game two was forfeited by Douglas, who did not have enough players to field a team in the second game of the doubleheader.
Sturgis improves to 7-8 on the season and finishes at the 9th seed in the Class A baseball standings. The playoff brackets will be released early this week with the first playoff games happening Friday at four locations across the state.
