STURGIS, SD – The Sturgis Scoopers used hot bats and overpowering pitching to rout the Rapid City Central Cobblers in a Sunday doubleheader at Strong Field. The Scoopers won game one 11-1 in five innings and shutout Central 20-0 in game two in five innings.
In the opener, Sturgis plated six runs in the fourth inning on singles by Evan Stroud and Yaden Miller, an error on a ball put in play by Hunter Janzen and Dylan Christenson, and a groundout by Brody Royer to put the game away.
Owen Cass got the pitching win for Sturgis. Cass surrendered one run on two hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four. Christenson threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen. The Scoopers racked up 11 hits in the game. Christenson went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs to lead Sturgis.
Kyle Schleuter took the loss for Central. The Cobblers only managed three hits in the ballgame.
In the nightcap, Sturgis shutout Central 20-0 in five innings by the mercy rule behind the dominant pitching of right hander Kain Peters.
The Scoopers tallied seven runs in the first inning, six in the second and another seven runs in the fourth to blowout the Cobblers.
Peters surrendered no runs on two hits over four innings for Sturgis, striking out seven and not giving up a walk. Brody Royer threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen to earn the save. Peters led the Scoopers at the plate as well, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Sturgis improved to 3-2 on the year.
Brayden Mount took the loss for Rapid City Central. Mount lasted one inning, allowing eight hits and 13 runs while striking out one. The Cobblers fell to 0-7 on the season.
Sturgis travels to McKeague Field in Rapid City on Monday to take on the Douglas Patriots at 7pm.
