STURGIS, S.D. — Kelton Olson didn’t allow a single run and just three hits as Sturgis defeated Douglas 15-0 on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader.
In the first inning, Sturgis got their offense started on a solo homer by senior Thor Sundstrom and runs scored by RJ Andrzejewski and Kaden Olson and led 3-0. The Scoopers put on their rally caps and put nine runs across the plate in the third inning. The Scoopers batters contributing to the big inning included Dustin Alan, Evan Stroud, Conner Cruickshank, Hunter Janzen, Andrzejewski, and Olson, all driving in runs in the frame.
Olson got the win for Sturgis on the mound, going four innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, striking out four and walking zero. Brendan Thomas took the loss for Douglas. Thomas surrendered 11 runs on seven hits over two innings, striking out two.
The Scoopers totaled 11 hits in the game. Owen Cass, Andrzejewski, Alan, and Janzen each collected two hits to lead the Scoopers. The Sturgis defense was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. The Scoopers stole eight bases during the game with Andrzejewski leading the way with two.
An early lead helped Sturgis defeat Douglas 15-3 in game two. The Scoopers got on the board first, plating a run on a groundout by Kaden Olson, an error, and a fielder’s choice by Connor Cruickshank in the first inning.
Sturgis scored seven runs in the fourth inning behind a walk by Cruickshank, a triple by Kelton Olson, a home run by Thor Sundstrom, and an error on a ball put in play by Owen Cass.
Dustin Alan earned the victory on the mound for Sturgis. Alan allowed four hits and three runs over five innings, striking out seven. Morgan Sandal took the loss for Douglas. The pitcher went three and two-thirds innings, allowing 14 runs on three hits and striking out two.
Olson went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Sturgis in hits. The Scoopers stole 11 bases during the game, led by Alan with four. Lucas Giersberg led Douglas with two hits in three at bats.
The Scoopers improve their record to 8-7 on the season and travel to Gillette on Thursday to take on the Roughriders in a doubleheader.
