RAPID CITY, SD – Taten Corkins collected three hits in four at bats, driving in three runs and leading the Scoopers at the plate as Sturgis defeated the Douglas Patriots 20-5 in six innings on Sunday at McKeague Field.
Douglas opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Aiden Coate scored one run after a Dalyn Dschaak wild pitch. The Patriots led 1-0 headed into the second inning.
Sturgis flipped the game on its head in the top of the second, scoring seven runs on five hits to take the lead, 7-1, then scored 11 runs in the sixth inning in nine hits on the way to victory by the 10-run mercy rule.
Bridger Massa-Battin earned the pitching win for Sturgis (6-12), throwing 43 pitches over two and two-third innings, striking out two and walking three, giving up three hits. The Scoopers finished with 17 hits and left eight on base. George Hamer finished 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs.
Lucas Giersberg took the loss for Douglas (0-8), allowing six hits and seven runs over three and one-third innings, striking out one and walking three. The Patriots had five hits and left five on base.
Next up for Sturgis is a game at Spearfish on Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 7pm.
