Scoopers Slug Their Way To Victories Over Central

STURGIS, SD – Kierra Killinger homered twice and drove in four runs in game one and crushed a grand slam in game two as the Sturgis Scooper softball squad hammered the Rapid City Central Cobblers 20-5 and 23-10 on Monday at the softball complex in a doubleheader.

Abigail Tweedy stepped in the pitching circle for the Scoopers and got the win in game one, giving up only three hits and one run over three and two-thirds innings. Tweedy struck out eight Cobblers with no walks. Kaci Buckneberg came in on relief and finished the game for Sturgis, earning the save. 

The Scoopers finished with 10 hits and were led by Emerson Gardner, who went 3-for-3, scoring four runs. Killinger and Avreigh Long had four RBIs each. 

Rapid City Central had only four hits and were led by Susan Dudley, who collected two hits. 

In game two, the Cobblers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. The Scoopers scored two runs to cut into the Central lead and then loaded the bases with two outs. Kierra Killinger stepped to the plate and crushed a grand slam to give Sturgis a lead they never relinquished.  It was back-to-back jacks as Bella Tobias pounded a solo home run on the next at bat to give the Scoopers a 7-5 lead  

Sturgis piled on the runs, plating 10 more in the second and five in the third to blow out Central, 23-10.  

Sturgis had 11 hits including homers by Abby Tweedy, Killinger, Tobias and Buckneberg. Tweedy picked up her second pitching win of the day for the Scoopers in game two.

Rapid City had seven hits in game two and Brianna Brown took the loss in the circle for the Cobblers.

The Scoopers improve to 5-7 on the season and travel to Watertown to take on the Arrows in Friday.
