MITCHELL, SD – The Sturgis Scooper baseball team got beat up in game one against Mitchell but bounced back for an extra innings victory in the nightcap at Cadwell Park.
In game one, the Kernels plated two runs in the bottom of the second and eight more in the third, building an insurmountable lead over the Scoopers. Â The game was halted after the top of the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.
Gavin Soukup got the win on the mound for Mitchell. The hurler allowed five hits and zero runs over five innings, walking one.
Connor Cruickshank toed the rubber for Sturgis. Cruickshank lasted three innings, allowing 12 hits and ten runs while striking out five. Yaden Miller threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Adam Flohr, Dylan Christenson, Owen Cass, Miller, and Hunter Janzen each collected one hit for the Scoopers.
The Kernels totaled 15 hits and were led by Tyler Sanderson and Dylan Soulek, who each had three hits.
Sturgis took the lead late in game two and defeated Mitchell 6-5 in extra innings.Â
Mitchell knotted the game up at five in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Hudson Haley singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Â Neither team scored in the seventh and the game went into extra innings.
Conner Cruickshank scored on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the eighth to give the Scoopers a 6-5 lead. Â The Sturgis defense did the rest in the bottom of the eighth, holding Mitchell scoreless to get the victory.
Kain Peters got the complete game win for Sturgis, going eight innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs while striking out four.
Peyton Schroder took the loss for Mitchell. The lefthander went five innings, allowing five runs on 13 hits, striking out three and walking zero. Parker Mendel threw three innings out of the bullpen.
Sturgis collected 18 hits in game two, with Adam Flohr, Dylan Christenson, Owen Cass, and Kain Peters each banging out three hits to lead the Scoopers. Â Mitchell had 11 hits in the game.
Sturgis (8-5) takes on Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Saturday.
