STURGIS, SD – The Sturgis Scoopers used a combination of solid pitching, stout defense and timely hitting to sweep the Rapid City Central Cobblers in a doubleheader on Friday night.
The Scoopers beat Central 10-3 in game one and 12-2 in game two by the 10-run mercy rule in five innings.Â
Kelton Olson earned the win in game one, throwing 73 pitches over 5 1/3 innings, striking out two, walking one and giving up six hits. Sturgis had 12 hits and seven left on base and were led by Owen Cass at the plate, who had two singles, two runs scores and two RBIs.Â
Kyle Schleuter took the loss for the Cobblers, who had seven hits and left seven on base. Ethan Caroline, Jace Thompson and Jacob Mellum had two hits each for Central.Â
The Cobblers struck first in game two, as leadoff hitter Kayden Jones singled, stole second, then crossed home plate on a hit by Brodee Matthews. Â Sturgis tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first as Dustin Alan scored on a Central error.Â
The Scoopers plated six runs on eight hits in the second to extend their lead to 7-1 and they never looked back, on their way to a 12-2 win in five innings.Â
Owen Cass got the win for the Scoopers, giving up only three hits on 63 pitches, striking out three and walking one. The Scoopers had 10 hits and were led by Alan, who went 2 for 3 at the plate, including an inside the park home run.Â
Ethan Caroline took the loss for the Cobblers.Â
Sturgis improves to 5-8 on the season and is in action next on Tuesday, as they visit McKeague Field to take on Rapid City Stevens in a doubleheader.Â
