STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Scooper volleyball team bounced back from a tough five set loss to Spearfish on Tuesday night to sweep the Douglas Patriots in three sets on Sept. 24 at West Gymnasium.
The Scoopers beat the Patriots 25-18, 25-15 and 25-20.
Sturgis head coach Debbie Cano introduced a slightly different lineup with Kylee Wolter at libero, taking over for Ella Johnson, who took the night off due to an injury she sustained in the match against Spearfish on Tuesday. Morgan Phillips saw her first start of the season at outside hitter.
The Scoopers dominated set one, leading 22-10 before Douglas went on a mini-run, cutting the Sturgis lead to 24-18. Junior Lexi Long, making her second start at outside hitter, ended the set with a soft kill to give Sturgis the 25-18 win.
The Patriots were down by five points early in set two, 11-7, until they closed the gap behind kills by Victoria Somerset and Savannah Gray. Sturgis pulled away late in the set and secured the win on an ace by Olivia Vollmer to win, 25-15.
Set three was much more competitive, as neither team led by more than two points until late in the set. Douglas led the Scoopers 20-18 but then made some unforced errors and Sturgis capitalized, scoring six straight points to lead 24-20. Junior Joellen Cano capped off a great night on the court to win set three and the match with an ace, 25-20.
Cano finished the match with 17 assists, two aces and one dig. Elizabeth Ortiz and Makayla Keffeler both had five kills, and junior Tylee Oswald added four kills and two blocks. The Scoopers improved to 3-3 on the season.
Douglas was led by Makayla Regevig with six digs and one kill. Ashlyne Utter added nine assists and one kill. Douglas fell to 0-6 on the season.
The Scoopers are back in action Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Hot Springs.
