Scotty Philip Days brings a bit of the Wild, Wild West

PHILIP, S.D. – It’s Scotty Philip Days in Philip this weekend. Activities range from 4-H to kids games, plenty of things to do for the adults, parades and more during the annual celebration that celebrates its roots in saving the majestic buffalo while settling the west and the men and women who played a part.

Events kicked off Thursday, August 7 with the opening of the Haakon Jackson 4-H Achievement Days that run through Saturday, August 10th.

Throughout Friday to Sunday, August 9-10th, the community offers free demolition derbies for kids and adults, the Wild West Buckaroo Train, the Showdown at the Puddin’ Pit and the Hometown Whiskers War Mustache Competition, followed by dancing in the streets to “The Bad River Band.”

Saturday brings a 5K Run/Walk, the Center Avenue Market and the “Wild, Wild West Parade.” There are car shows, Haakon County Library Book Sales, water games and inflatable “Saddle-ups.” A Tractor Pull begins at 12noon followed by a Corn Hole Tournament, Talent Show, a movie at the Gem Theatre and the Philip Volunteer Fire Department Demotion Derby.

This year’s Grand Marshal for the Wild West Scotty Philip Day Parade that begins at 10:00a.m., is Jerry Roseth.

Jerry, alongside his late wife Lou, owned and operated the Philip Livestock Auction from August 1974 until August 2006. Under their stewardship, the Philip Livestock Auction became a vital regional marketing hub, serving as a cornerstone of our local economy. Their efforts ensured that cattle from Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota found their way to buyers across the Midwest, solidifying the auction’s reputation as a priority site for livestock trading.

Jerry’s influence extends beyond the auction house. His active support of the local school, particularly through his grandchildren, underscores his commitment to nurturing the next generation and strengthening our educational system. His contributions have been instrumental in sustaining Philip’s economic vitality and fostering a sense of community.

Jerry embodies the spirit of what the community celebrates this weekend. His unwavering dedication and support have made the community stronger and a wonderful place to live.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Jerry for all he has done to make Philip a beacon of resilience and community spirit,” said Scotty Philip Days organizers.

There is breakfast on the menu starting Sunday, August 11th hosted by the Knights of Columbus and held at the Senior Citizen’s Center and the Spud Gittings Memorial Golf Tournament at the Lake Waggoner Golf Course at 9:00a.m and 1:00p.m.
