Washington D.C. – The recent annual “fly-in” by members of the South Dakota Farmers Union to Washington D.C. to talk policy with Senators and Representatives was a big success according to Doug Sombke, president of the South Dakota Farmers Union.
Hundreds of Farmer’s Union members from across the country participated in the annual “fly-in” to the nation’s capitol. The South Dakota delegation was headed by president Doug Sombke who says they pushed for health care reform, cap and trade, and rectifying bad trade deals.
“We want to make this administration fix a few of the trade negotiations that have transpired over the past eight-plus years that haven’t been so good for farmers.”
He says South Dakotans who may not know the facts about issues such as health care reform need to go right to the source for answers.
“My advice to everyone is, don’t listen to the rhetoric. Check it out yourself. Ask the questions. You need to call and visit with the Congress representatives that we have.”
Sombke says when it comes to cap and trade, farmers need a say in the carbon trading discussion, which will be a “bottom line” financial issue he says, for many farm operations concerned about production costs.
