SD Highway Patrol, Sturgis Police issue Wednesday’s Rally Statistics Report

STURGIS, S.D. – The highway patrol has released their latest Rally Tally, which shows six injury crashes from Tuesday’s reporting period.

The number of injury crashes year to date rise to 32 – two more than on this date last year.

Non-injury crashes total 27 – up five over last year.

The patrol has made 71 D-U-I arrests so far this year and made 68 felony drug arrests. So far, drug arrests are up over the year while D-U-I arrests are down a bit. Misdemeanor drug arrests total 118 so far, well ahead of last year.

The number of fatal crashes remained at two.

Locally, Sturgis Police say illegal parking, D-U-I and misdemeanor drug arrests remain their biggest problems at the rally.

Police have reported 9 D-U-I’s in their latest report, along with 11 misdemeanor drug arrests and 4 felony drug arrests. Year-to-date D-U-I arrests are now 43 and felony drug arrests are 25. All numbers remain up over last year.

Police also handed out 14 illegal parking citations Tuesday.

In other stats, Sturgis Police reported 5 fight calls, 2 seat belt violations, one weapons violation and one indecent exposure citation.

So far, police have made 150 traffic-related arrests and 105 non-traffic related arrests.

Meanwhile,

Traffic into Sturgis for this year’s Rally remains down, according to the latest numbers from the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

The D-O-T recorded 55,848 vehicles entering Sturgis Tuesday. That is down 4.2-percent from the five-year-average.

Overall traffic numbers are 250,699 – down from the five year average of 290,671.

Here is a synopsis of Tuesday’s injury crashes:

Injury Crashes:

At 11:14am, Tuesday, Interstate 90, mile marker 17: A 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling eastbound, entered the gore of Exit 17, and tipped the motorcycle. The driver was wearing a helmet and received minor injuries.

At 12:03pm, Tuesday, South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 74: A 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound, hit some debris on the roadway, left the roadway, and tipped over. The driver and passenger were wearing helmets. The driver was not injured, and the passenger received serious non-life-threatening injuries.

At 2:12pm, Tuesday, Nemo Road, and Erskine Gulch Road: A 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling northbound, left the roadway and tipped over. The driver was wearing a helmet and received minor injuries.

At 2:29pm, Tuesday, South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 75: A 2021 Indian motorcycle was traveling northbound, failed to negotiate the curve, tipped, and came to rest on the shoulder. The driver was wearing a helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries.

At 2:34pm, Tuesday, Interstate 90, mile marker 30: A 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle was eastbound on the Exit 30 on ramp. The driver lost control, entered the south ditch, and crashed. The driver and passenger were not wearing helmets and received minor injuries.

At 8:01pm, Tuesday, US Highway 16385, mile marker 28: A 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound, failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway. The driver was separated from the motorcycle. The driver was not wearing helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries.
