RAPID CITY, S.D. – Law enforcement say an accident on U.S. Highway 16 Saturday afternoon resulted in major tie-ups west of Rapid City at Bear Country USA.
The accident happened shortly after 1:00 p.m. and completely closed Highway 16 for almost two hours. It was reported as a T-bone accident with multiple injuries and a possible entrapment.
Arriving first responders from the Rockerville Fire Department quickly determined that they had a serious accident with one person trapped. They initially called for four ambulances, as well as for Pennington County Search and Rescue and Rapid City Fire Truck Six to help get the trapped person out.
In all, they transported eleven patients — including a couple of small children — to Monument Rapid City Hospital with varying degrees of injuries. In addition to the four Rapid City ambulances, Keystone and Hill City ambulances also transported patients.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is expected to release more information about the crash.
