Several wildfires break out in Wednesday heat

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Fire crews around western South Dakota responded to several wildfires Wednesday afternoon.

The Big Buffalo Fire was reported 17 miles southwest of Wall. The fire, reported at 5:45 p.m., had burned about 16 acres before being contained last night.

Great Plains Fire reports lightning sparked the fire and federal and local resources had responded.

The Elephant Fire burning south of Custer burned about 5 acres. State, local and federal resources along with a heavy air fight was taking place on the fire earlier in the day, including a helicopter and air tankers.

Great Plains fire says that fire was contained just after 9:00 last night.

Another fire, dubbed the Rye Fire, burned 5 acres two miles south of Oelrichs. The fire was sparked by equipment and crews had it contained Wednesday evening.

And the Cinnamon Fire, sparked by lightning 4 miles southwest of Rapid City, was contained at a tenth of an acre.
