Severe drought settles in to western South Dakota

STURGIS, S.D. – The latest drought monitor report shows extreme western Meade County and extreme eastern Lawrence County have slipped into severe drought.

The report, issued Thursday, indicates Sturgis, along with western Butte County and all of Harding County to the north, and western Pennington County, western Custer County and most of Fall River County to the south are all in severe drought.

Western Lawrence County, including Spearfish, are listed in moderate drought.

The drought conditions are having area fire crews provide a warning to rally-goers to be careful heading into the final weekend.

Central Meade County was listed in moderate drought with eastern Meade County in abnormally dry conditions.

There are no drought conditions in eastern South Dakota.
