Severe thunderstorm brings damage, power outages to parts of Meade, Pennington counties

STURGIS, S.D. – A severe thunderstorm brought hail, rain and high wind Thursday afternoon, resulting in some damage in southwestern Meade County and northern Pennington County.

The intersection of Peaceful Pines road and Sturgis Road was closed for a while after the storm brought down several powerlines. That led to some power outages in the area as crews worked on repairing the lines.

In the Box Elder area, strong winds also tipped over a number of trailers. According to a social media post, a trailer was blown over at an RV park east of the Flying J. Bystanders were able to pull an individual out and they say he was taken to the hospital.

Some tree branches were also brought down in the Black Hawk area, and on I-90 between Piedmont and Black Hawk, the heavy rain and small hail led to some travelers pulling off the road to wait it out.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City says the heavy rain led to near zero visibility.

Some hail up to an inch in diameter was reported at Summerset and Piedmont.

The storm missed Sturgis, although the lightning was close enough to delay the start of the Sturgis Scooper vs Pierre girls soccer game.
