Severe thunderstorms bring large hail, flooding Monday

STURGIS, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain, large hail and even flash flooding to the Black Hills area Monday night.

Storms began in northeast Wyoming, where they hit Devil’s Tower National Monument with large hail and heavy rain that broke windows and brought some trees down.

Devil’s Tower is closed today due to the severe storm  damage.

Power was also out in the area as the storms moved into western South Dakota.

One-inch hail was reported in Spearfish and Deadwood, and heavy rain in the Deadwood area prompted a flash flood warning where 2-3 inches of rain was reported. Some spotty power outages were also reported in Spearfish.

The Tilford area reported 1.25 inch hail and 2-inch hail was reported in Brownsville.

Sturgis didn’t see much in the way of hail, but did receive a welcome inch-plus of rain from the storms.
