PHILIP, S.D. – Two thunderstorms merged into one, setting off a tornado warning last evening in rural Haakon County.
The National Weather Service issued the warning just before 7:00 p.m.
The storm was located northwest of Philip and moving its direction.
The Philip Fire Department says a funnel was observed, but did not make contact with the ground.
The storm, however, did pack some large hail – up to 1.5 inches.
Earlier, the storm rolled through rural eastern Meade County where hail and wind stripped leaves off trees south of Faith. The 1.75-inch hail was accompanied by wind gusts in excess of 50 mph.
