MITCHELL, SD – The 2023 Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a cold and snowy winter for much of the Northern Plains. Associate Editor Tim Goodwin says South Dakota is right in the heart of it.
“This is going to be a year of ‘a tale of two winters’ for the country. A good section of it will have severe cold, very snowy weather. Other parts of the country, more in the west, will be more mild,” says Goodwin.
He continued, “You guys are right there in that cold, snowy area for this winter. Temperatures are going to be below normal which I’m sure you don’t want to hear. And for your region in the upper Midwest, you’re looking at above normal snowfall for this winter.”
Goodwin says the cold and snow should be here by Thanksgiving this year.
“The cold really starts to set in by mid-November is what we’re thinking. Early December, later January and mid-February are among the coldest periods you’ll have this year. You will see snow as early as late November.
For those who like to see a white Christmas, this is your year, says Goodwin. “There are some snow periods we’re predicting for the last 10 days of December so you’ll definitely have a white Christmas. Overall, it’s cold and snowy for where you guys are this year.”
Goodwin says the Almanac has had an 80 percent accuracy rate over the years.
