Slippery roads Saturday night lead to multitude of accidents

STURGIS, S.D. – Light snow, rain and freezing rain brought slippery roads to the area along with several accidents, leading law enforcement to encourage safe travel Saturday night.

In Rapid City, police issued a motorist advisory, saying resources were responding to an exceptionally high number of crashes caused by winter conditions. The RCPD stated that If you don’t have to drive tonight, it’s a good idea not to.

Rapid City Public Works was working to address icy conditions as quickly as they could.

Among the number of accidents was a semi truck that slid off I-90 at the Haines Avenue exit. The cab of the truck went over a wall, crashing on to the road below. That accident had reportedly shut down I-90 at the crash site. The driver was reportedly not seriously hurt.

The highway patrol also reported a semi crash at mile marker 58 Saturday night affecting traffic.

In Sturgis, police say they had two accidents at I-90’s Exit 32 due to the icy bridge there.  Sturigs Police Chief Geody Vandewater says the first vehicle hit the ice and lost control on the bridge crashing into the guardrail. Another vehicle came along and lost control, hit the first car and rolled. He says two occupants suffered minor injuries and were taken to Sturgis Hospital while another refused medical treatment.

Roads were in even worse condition in central South Dakota. Earlier Saturday, Law enforcement and other first responders responded to a private bus line rollover at milepost 207 which is just west of the Vivian exit. Several passengers were injured in the crash and were transported for their injuries. The highway patrol said the bus will be left in the south ditch until a later date for recovery.
