Snow and ice make weekend travel dangerous

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Snow and ice made travel dangerous in western South Dakota over the weekend.

Two people were hurt in a rear-end collision involving two semis on I-90 near Kadoka Saturday morning.

One of the drivers was trapped inside and had to be removed by firefighters on the scene.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

There’s been no further updates on their conditions at this time.

South Dakota Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.

There were a number of incidents over the weekend of vehicles sliding into ditches due to icy road conditions.

Just outside Sturgis, law enforcement were tending to a vehicle slide-in when a semi truck, traveling to fast for road conditions, failed to move over for a law enforcement vehicle, and came within inches of hitting the vehicle. The incident was posted by Sturgis Police on their Facebook page, encouraging drivers to slow down and move over for stopped emergency vehicles.

With kids heading back to school following the long Christmas break, local law enforcement is encouraging drivers to slow down and watch for the kiddos.
