South Dakota Health Officials report 1,020 new COVID-19 cases in their Tuesday report

PIERRE, S.D. – Health officials reported 1,020 new COVID-19 cases in their Tuesday report. On their COVID-19 Dashboard, they say today’s total includes numbers from the weekend. Of the 1,020 new cases, 112 are listed as probable.

Active cases of the virus have surpassed 5,000, totaling 5,035 as of today. The last time active cases were this high was early January.

Hospitalizations also continue to march upward. The State Health Department reported 216 people hospitalized today. That is up from 168 yesterday. The Black Hills continue to lead the state in hospitalizations with 111. Of those, 22 are in the I.C.U. and there are now 29 on ventilators. Monument Health says their available I.C.U. beds are running low.

The bulk of those hospitalized are not vaccinated.

Two new deaths were reported today, sending the state’s total to 2,069. One of those new deaths was out of Haakon County. There have been 10 COVID-19 related deaths over the past week.

Across the Black Hills area, there were 576 new cases.

Pennington County had 298 confirmed cases and 25 listed as probable.

Meade County added 90 confirmed cases and 7 probable and Lawrence County reported 64 confirmed and 4 probable.

Butte County had 50 new cases, all confirmed, and Custer county added 17 confirmed and 1 probable case.

Fall River County listed 4 confirmed and 6 probable and Oglala Lakota County added 5 confirmed new cases.

Harding County also had 5 new cases listed Tuesday’s report.
