South Dakota health officials report 170 new cases of COVID-19, one new death Wednesday

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Health officials reported 170 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, with 42 of them listed as probable.

Active cases totaled 1,789 and the number of people hospitalized remained stable at 103.

One new death was reported today, sending the state’s death toll since the pandemic began to 1,962. The new death was a woman in the 60-69 age range from Minnehaha County.

Across the Black Hills area, Pennington County reported 20 new cases with one of them considered probable.

Lawrence County added three new COVID-19 cases, Butte County had 2 and there was one new case each in Fall River and Oglala Lakota Counties.

As for the vaccination effort, Health Secretary Kim Malsam Rysdon says they have seen over 576,000 doses administered to South Dakotans.

She says as of today, 54-percent of the state’s population has received at least one dose of vaccine and 44-percent have completed their vaccine series.
