South Dakota House approves resolution laying out process for Ravnsborg impeachment

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota House voted 58-10 Tuesday morning for a resolution laying out the process for possible impeachment of state Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg.

HR 7001 passed 58-10 with two excused. The 10 Representatives voting no were: Randy Gross (R-Elkton), Steven Haugaard (R-Sioux Falls), Taffy Howard (R-Rapid City), Phil Jensen (R-Rapid City), Chris Karr (R-Sioux Falls), Sam Marty (R-Prairie City), John Mills (R-Volga), Scott Odenbach (R-Spearfish), Marty Overweg (R-New Holland) and Bethany Soye (R-Sioux Falls).

The rsolution calls for House Speaker Spencer Gosch to appoint a select committee of nine members to investigate whether Ravnsborg committed impeachable offenses.

Gosch said he would appoint House Republican leader Kent Peterson; House Democrat leader Jamie Smith; Democrat representativeRyan Cwach; and Republican representatives Mike Stevens, Doug Barthel, Kevin Jensen, Steve Haugaard and Jon Hansen.

The House adopted a second resolution Tuesday that calls for the House to return 14 days after its chief clerk receives the committee’s report.

The resolution further says that, should the House approve articles of impeachment, the process would move to the Senate for a trial and the House would return on the day that the trial starts.

The move to impeach the Attorney General follows his ‘no contest’ plea regarding the death of Joe Boever, whom Ravnsborg struck and killed with his car in September of 2020.
