SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Monday afternoon, the S.D. House of Representatives passed a resolution that says they “may” impeach Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg.
The resolution was amended in committee last week to allow for the criminal trial process to occur before possibly taking up impeachment.
The tally was 57 yes, 11 no, and two excused. The measure reached the two-thirds threshold necessary to bring charges. The impeachment trial, if there is one, would happen in the state senate.
The legislature will likely be out of session by the time Ravnsborg there is a disposition on his three misdemeanor charges connected to the fatal crash. The legislature can call itself back into a special session on a two-thirds vote.
The impeachment resolution arises from Ravnsborg striking and killing pedestrian Joe Boever the night of September 12, 2020, near Highmore on U.S. 14.
Gov. Kristi Noem has called for Ravnsborg’s immediate resignation. Ravnsborg has said through spokespeople that he has no plans to resign. The state’s major law enforcement groups representing sheriff’s, police chiefs, and rank and file officers have also called for Ravnsborg’s resignation.
Former attorney general Marty Jackley has also announced that he would seek a third term and run against Ravnsborg for the Republican nomination in 2022.
