GILLETTE, Wyo. – The 2023 National High School Rodeo Finals is underway in Gillette, and Team South Dakota leads the girls standings after the first go-round.
Team South Dakota leads with 855 points, followed by Wyoming in second with 800. New Mexico sits in third and Kansas is fourth.
On the boys’ side, Team South Dakota sits 11th with Texas on top with 560 points. Utah is second and Wyoming is third.
In the barrel racing, Piper Cordes of Wall helped Team South Dakota gain that top ranking as she turned in a top time of 17.015 in the first go.
Landry Haugen of Sturgis is also off to a good start. She placed sixth in the girls cutting and fifth in the reined cow horse.
In the bull riding, Gillette’s Hayden Welsh is third in the bull riding and Brylee Grubb of Spearfish had a fifth place finish in the first go of the goat tying.
Caitlin Moore of Wright, Wyoming had the top time in the pole bending with a 19.66.
And, in the team roping, Drew Harper of Faith and his roping partner Sern Weishaar of Belle Fourche turned in a fourth place finish in the opening go.
