South Dakota reports 14 new COVID-19 related deaths Thursday

STURGIS, S.D. – State health officials reported 14 COVID-19 related deaths in their latest report – one of the highest daily totals since the pandemic began.

Of the 14 new deaths reported, six are men and eight are women with twelve in the 80+ age range and two in the 60-69 age range. The new deaths were in the following counties: One each in Bennett, Davison, Jerauld, and Lyman, two each in Turner and Lincoln and three each in Gregory and Minnehaha counties.  

As for new cases, the health department reported 529 confirmed cases and 7 probable cases for a total of 536. The active caseload rose 162 today to 4,673 and the state’s number of people hospitalized due to COVID-19 reached 284 Thursday.

West River reported 141 new cases today with Pennington County reporting the highest amount as 57 new cases were reported. Active cases in Pennington County reached 536.

Lawrence County had the second most with 12 and Meade County reported 10 new cases. The total in Lawrence County is 525 with 109 active cases. Meade County’s cumulative total is now 669 with 121 active cases.

Both Fall River and Oglala Lakota County reported 9 new cases and Butte and Custer County each added 5 new cases.

Other new cases across West River include 7 in Bennett, 6 each in Dewey and Lyman, 2 each in Corson and Jackson and one each in Harding, Ziebach, Stanley, Gregory and Tripp counties.

There were 2,511 new persons tested reported on Thursday.
