CUSTER, S.D. – It may be winter, but dry conditions continue to persist in areas of western South Dakota.
In the southern hills, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office says area fire crews were battling their second wildfire in as many days today.
In a social media post, Custer fire crews reported the fire was near Skyline Heights south of Highway 40. They were asking people to please avoid the area so fire crews had room to work.
Photo shared by the sheriff’s office showed the fire burned right up to homes in the area, but there were no reports of any damage.

On Sunday, fire crews battled the Red Star Fire, located 9 miles southwest of Custer.
The fire burned just under 2 acres of both private and state land. It was listed as contained Monday.
The cause of both fires were under investigation.
