SPEARFISH, SD – The Spearfish Fire Department knocked down a structure fire on Seaton Circle Monday afternoon.
Fire Chief Travis Ladson explained that the report of flames and smoke coming out of the commercial structure came in at approximately 3:52 p.m. The suite from which the smoke was billowing houses Air Systems Mechanical. Also housed in the commercial building are
Rolling Bones Outdoors and Something Borrowed, LLC.
When engines arrived on scene, they immediately set up on the west side of the building for an initial attack of the fire. Ladder 8 hooked a hydrant to supply a large diameter hose to Engine 2 for a water supply. The fire was knocked down quickly, and fire units then began checking for hot spots and extension of the fire. They did find hot spots and fire in the wall, causing them to open a section of the wall to extinguish the additional flames. Firefighters then checked the attic, finding hot spots in the insulation that were subsequently cooled and put out.
Chief Ladson explained that firefighters then ventilated the building to get the smoke out. The fire was mainly contained to a work bench area within the suite, and there was heavy smoke damage, as well. Damage estimates have not yet been compiled.
“We are thankful to live in an area where neighbors watch out for each other,” Chief Ladson said, describing that no one had been inside the suite where the fire started. The reporting party was in one of the adjacent suites and quickly called 911.
Chief Ladson thanked all of the members of the department for their response and work at the call. There were three engines and one ladder truck on scene, with approximately 20 personnel.
