St. Thomas More Defeats Scoopers at West Gym

STURGIS, S.D. — The St. Thomas More Lady Cavaliers outscored the Sturgis Scoopers 16-0 in the third quarter to earn a 61-35 win at West Gym on Thursday night.

The Scoopers played a strong first half and were down 32-23 at the break but could not withstand the Lady Cavalier defensive pressure in the second half, only managing 12 points through the third and fourth quarters.

Senior Reese Ross scored a career high 34 points to lead STM (6-2).  Ross snagged nine rebounds and went 13 of 15 from the free throw line. Ross talked about her game.

St. Thomas More shot 20 of 49 from the field for 40% and 18 of 23 from the charity stripe for 78%.  The Lady Cavs had 13 turnovers and 21 rebounds.

Senior Rachael Banks scored eight points for Sturgis (0-4), with freshman Tori Williams adding seven points and five boards.  The Scoopers were 10 of 42 from the field for 23% and 11 of 15 from the free throw line for 73%.  Sturgis committed 23 turnovers and had 21 rebounds.

The St. Thomas More win was the 400th of head coach Brandon Kandolin’s career at the Rapid City school. He credits the players that have worked hard for him over the years.

The Scoopers are in action next on Friday night as they host Belle Fourche.  Varsity tipoff is scheduled for 7pm.
