St Thomas More drops a heartbreaker to Elk Point-Jefferson

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The St Thomas More Cavaliers dropped a 53-50 game to Elk Point-Jefferson in first round action at the Class A Boys State Basketball Tournament.

The two teams battled all game long, with Elk Point-Jefferson holding a slim 26-21 lead at halftime.

The Cavaliers would outscore Elk Point-Jefferson 12-10 in the third, and the two teams were tied at 50 with :04 seconds left in the game.

After a time out, Devon Schmitz of Elk Point-Jefferson put up a three-pointer that went through the net, giving the Huskies the win. Schmitz finished with 18 points on the night and was 6 of 6 from beyond the arc.

Caleb Hollenbeck led St Thomas More scoring 32 points.

St Thomas More will play Mount Vernon/Plankinton in the consolation semifinals.

Elk Point-Jefferson plays Sioux Falls Christian, who beat Mount Vernon/Plankinton 83-55.

In other evening games at the Boys’ Tournaments:

At the Class B tournament, Aberdeen Christian defeated Ethan 57-47 and DeSmet held on for a 51-47 win over Viborg-Hurley.

At the Class AA, Sioux Fall Lincoln downed Sioux Falls Roosevelt 56-48 while Mitchell outlasted Pierre 60 to 51.
